Abadeh is a town of around 50,000 inhabitants in the north of the Fars province, roughly midway between Shiraz and Isfahan. Its situation, on the northern flanks of the Zagros and close to the ancient caravan routes has left its inhabitants receptive to outside influences.
This is reflected in the rugs produced in the town. The most famous Abadeh design is a stylised flower motif repeated in the centre of the rug and at each corner. Other designs, seen less frequently nowadays, include the Zil-e-Sultan design of flower, vases and pairs of birds. Principal traditional colours are red, dark blue and white. Pile is always wool, warps and wefts cotton.
