The word Band is a Persian word meaning "flat strip of material". These are woven straps used for securing the load onto the back of a camel. Of course, the desire to add decoration to any woven item is irrestible, especially to the tribes of south west Iran and often a different design appears on each side of the band.
They are often found with interesting wooden or iron buckles woven into one end. These can be much older than the straps themselves as they have worn out and been replaced over time.
Tent bands are a form of band especially woven for use inside the yurt (traditional tribal tent). These are usually about 45 feet long and up to 18 inches wide. They are attached round the interior of the tent where the sides meet the roof and serve the dual purposes of draughtproofing and decoration.
