Carpets produced in Morocco fall into two distinct categories: Urban tradition and tribal tradition. The most important centre for Urban carpets is Rabat, where workshops grew up in the 19th Century mostly adopting Anatolian styles and influences.
On the other hand, the designs of the rural Berber tribal rugs and carpets have remained largely independent of Persian or Anatolian influences right up to the present day. These carpets were not exported to Europe until the early 20th century when certain influential designers and architects began to show interest and appreciation for them which stimulated demand.
Berber rugs are characterised by bold and free designs which are often assymetrical. In the last twenty years or so, there has been a revival of interest in these delightful pieces.
