Caucasian Rugs, Caucasian Carpets

The Caucasus mountain range in Southern Russia runs diagonally down from the Black sea in the West to the Caspian sea in the East. The area to the South is called the Transcaucasus and is the primary rug producing region. The population is of various tribal origin. Rugs are woven by Azeri Turks, Kurds and Armenians.

Rugs have been produced in the Caucasus for at least 600 years. Rugs are brightly coloured and generally have geometric designs. Caucasian kilims are usually woven as a single piece. Motifs consist of adjacent or compacted large geometric medallions.

These days Caucasian rugs are often produced by refugee Turkmen weavers displaced from Aghanistan into Pakistan, especially in the region around Peshawar. These rugs represent very quality and good value for money.
