Joshagan is one of a cluster of villages in central Iran, north-west of Isfahan. The area is agricultural but poor, with no monuments of importance, though Joshagan has a tiled Imamzaseh or Mausoleum of a saint.
They have been weaving carpets in the same design here for over two centuries; there is an authenticated 18th century Joshagan carpet in the Victoria and Albert museum.
The design is based on the lozenge; a series of lozenges is scattered evenly over the field, sometimes with a central medallion, also lozenge shaped. Individual motifs used within the design include flowers, leaves and willow trees.
Other villages in the area of importance for carpet production are Meymey and Khosrowbad.
