Mahal carpets derive their name from Mahallat, a village in the south of the Arak region. Mahallat is not only famous for its carpets but also for its natural springs which are visited by people from all over Iran.
The carpets are highly decorative with strong floral designs. They enjoy enduring popularity. They are large and loosely woven and the carpets have a soft lustrous feel. Warps and wefts are usually cotton but wefts in wool are also found.
The name Mahal is also associated with Zeigler and Saruk carpets also come from a nearby village.
