Milas in North Western Turkey is one of the oldest carpet making centres. Carpets and rugs have been produced here since the 16th century. The weavers originate from the Turkomen tribes.
The "classical" Milas carpets and rugs are prayer rugs, with a mihrâb in the design. The frame of the mihrab contains stylised motifs of great significance to the Muslim prayer tradition. The "baroque" style Milas carpets originated in the 18th and 19th centuries when the export market had gathered momentum. These clearly show the influence of European taste often incorporating floral motifs.
A further type of Milas rug is the "medallion" type. These are also know as Karacahisar carpets after the village where these originated and are still produced to this day.
Milas carpets are wool warp and weft and natural dyes are always used.
