Saruk Rugs, Saruk Carpets

Saruk, one of the most famous names in Persian carpets, is a tiny and obscure village to the north-west of Arak in the Markazi or central province of Iran. In fact many villages in the Arak area weave carpets; the most famous are Ferahan, Seraband and Liliman. Other names associated with the region are Mahal and Chesmeh. The people are of mixed origin: Persian, Turkish, Armenian and Georgian, resulting in a wide variety of designs, techniques and sizes in the carpets of the region.

Old Saruk carpets epitomise Persian viallage carpet weaving at its finest. The designs are creative, executed with good wool on warps and wefts of cotton. In other pieces, only vegetable dyes were used. More recently, Saruk rugs are of high quality, solidly woven with curvilinear designs.
