Also seen as Soumac and Soumak. This describes a particular sort of flatweave in which the weft encircles groups of warps. Variations in the style include Plain Soumak, Countered Sumak and Reverse Soumak.
The Soumak style is commonly used in weavings of the Near East and Central Asia. Functional pieces, bags and animal trappings are Soumak woven as are rugs, blankets and mats. The Shahsavan and Kurds excel in the use of this structure.
