The Turkmen is a tribe of immense importance. Most of them live in Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. The Iranian population is concentrated in the province of Mazandran and belongs to three tribes: the Yomut, the Tekke and the Atabat. The first two are famous for carpets. Turkmen rugs are traditionally constructed of wool (pile and foundation) and have limited colour schemes of reds, black and ivory with other colours being occasionally introduced. The typical design is of geometric ‘guls’: octagonal designs which vary according to tribe.
